The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to place five specific tryptamine hallucinogens, including their salts, isomers, and salts of isomers, into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
Target Substances
The rulemaking targets the following five chemical compounds:
4-OH-DiPT (4-hydroxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine)
5-MeO-AMT (5-methoxy–methyltryptamine)
5-MeO-MiPT (5-methoxy-N-methyl-N-isopropyltryptamine)
5-MeO-DET (5-methoxy-N,N-diethyltryptamine)
DiPT (N,N-diisopropyltryptamine)
Key Background and Evaluation Findings
Scientific and Medical Evaluation: The DEA initiated this action following updated scientific and medical evaluations and scheduling recommendations provided by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in April 2026.
Abuse Potential and Public Health Risks: According to federal reviews, these substances share structural and pharmacological similarities with existing Schedule I hallucinogens (such as DMT, psilocybin, and LSD), acting primarily as agonists at serotonin receptors (such as 5-HT2A). Federal databases, law enforcement encounters, and poison center reports indicate a history of non-medical use, perceptual distortions, and adverse clinical effects.
Medical Use: The DEA and HHS concluded that these five tryptamines have no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States and lack established safety for use under medical supervision.
Regulatory Impact
If finalized as proposed, handling these substances—including manufacturing, distributing, importing, exporting, engaging in research, or conducting chemical analysis—will require registration with the DEA. Individuals and entities possessing these compounds who are unwilling or unable to obtain a Schedule I registration must surrender or transfer stocks prior to the effective date in compliance with federal guidelines.
